Life Update: Going Nomadic and Launching a Community for Founders
An update 2 years in the making
Oh hey 👋
It’s been a while, and I’m writing you from my favorite coffee shop in Milwaukee, the first stop on my nomadic journey.
Living a nomadic life for a few months is something I’ve thought about for more than a year.
I’ve got friends all across the United States and, due to Twitter, have even more connections around the world.
At this point in my life, as a 31-year-old single guy with a remote job, I’m taking advantage of all the freedom I have right now to live anywhere and visit many of the people I care about.
In The Tail End, Tim Urban wrote about how little time we have left to spend with people we love and to do all the things we love to do. One example, in particular, stood out:
It turns out that when I graduated from high school, I had already used up 93% of my in-person parent time. I’m now enjoying the last 5% of that time. We’re in the tail end.
I’ve already been in Milwaukee for a week, staying with my mom in her apartment, and this is about how much time I normally see her the entire year because, when not nomadic, I live in Los Angeles.
Seeing how I’ll be in Milwaukee for another 3-4 weeks, I’ll spend as much time with her on this trip as I normally would in 4 years 🤯 .
The same goes for friends who have moved away from Los Angeles.
By going nomadic for a few months and spending extended amounts of time in different locations where my friends live, I’ll have the opportunity to spend more time with them than I ever normally would.
Seeing family and friends more was a huge motivation for choosing the nomad life. After all, relationships are everything.
On that note, after first launching a community for founders in 2020 that I ultimately shut down, I’ve launched a new community for founders and it’s off to a phenomenal start!
We’ve got about 100 members in the community and the engagement is much higher than I anticipated.
Each week, we hold office hours, where founders can ask questions, get feedback, and just get to know other founders.
We’ve also had a couple of in-person events in Los Angeles and have a digital platform where members can connect with each other and learn from the collective knowledge and experiences of all members.
It’s been great to see how it’s grown in a little more than a month.
Of course, there are much bigger plans for the community, bringing in guest speakers, creating more resources for members, and developing some key partnerships.
For now, I just want to continue making it as valuable as possible for members.
So, what’s next? Where to?
I’m not quite sure, but I do want to visit Minneapolis, NYC, Denver, Phoenix, SF, and a few other cities while continuing to build VITALIZE, this founder community, and everything else.
Want to stay up to date with all that’s going on with my nomadic adventures, the community I’m building, and more? Subscribe below 😊
Till next time,
Justin
